(October 8, 2007) - At 10am this morning, Harford County Public Schools officially broke ground on the new $57 million Bel Air High School. Actual construction started earlier this spring with the relocation of utilities and continued throughout the summer with building pad preparation. Footers and slabs are currently being installed for the new 258,134 SF state-of-the-art facility. Next week steel columns will begin to be lifted into place for the structural frame.
State and local officials attended the groundbreaking including Dr. Jacqueline C. Haas, Superintendent of Schools; Thomas L. Fidler, Jr., Board of Education President; Joseph L. Voskuhl, Bel Air High School Principal; David R. Craig, County Executive; James V. McMahan, County Council; Terence O. Hanley, Chair of Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners; along with many others.
The new school is being constructed directly behind the existing school and is scheduled to open in August 2009. At that time, the existing school will be demolished. The new school will feature two 3-story academic towers, state-of-the-art science labs, gymnasium, auditorium, and media center.
