Dan Fogarty Title: Project Manager
Like other Project Managers and Superintendents at Oak Contracting, Dan has built his career around construction. Native to Baltimore, he has seen our city and the surrounding metropolitan area grow over the past four decades and has personally contributed to many of those construction projects.
Even as a child living in a Baltimore City row home, Dan was fascinated with construction. He was constantly building something and working on various projects. At the age of twelve, his family relocated to rural Westminster where Dan found new opportunities in the form of tree houses. His passion for building continued through high school and upon graduation, Dan went to work for Starret Construction as a laborer. He was tasked with constructing man holes from brick, long before pre-cast came to the market. With an ambition to learn, Dan quickly signed up for an apprenticeship with Leroy Walker Masonry and became a bricklayer. His boss, Mr. Walker, taught him a valuable lesson, which Dan still practices today, “Any job big or small, do it right or not at all.”
This philosophy proved successful with Dan. In the mid-1980s he was working as a mason on Windfield Elementary School in Carroll County when the General Contractor offered Dan the opportunity to finish the project as superintendent. The current superintendent was called to another job for the firm and Dan filled the role to finish the project. From that moment on, Dan continued to serve in a superintendent capacity and predominantly worked on school facilities. He continued to strengthen his role by strategically taking on new responsibilities in an effort to learn different aspects of construction. For example, Dan took a position at Towson General Mechanical to gain a better understanding of the mechanical systems in buildings. He has also worked for an asbestos abatement firm to help round out his knowledge of renovations requiring the removal of hazardous materials.
Dan's most memorable project in his 33-year career is also his most recent; the new Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School for Prince George's County Public Schools also featured throughout this issue of Cornerstone. His extensive and well-rounded experience was a huge contributor to the overall success of this mammoth project. With the completion of Wise High School, Dan was promoted to Project Manager as he continues to take on new responsibilities, fulfill his ambition to continually learn new things, and keep his passion for construction as strong as it was as a kid.
